You bought a beautiful digital art file — now what size should you print it? The short answer: any size your frame needs, as long as you match the aspect ratio and your file is high resolution. Here is everything you need to know before you hit print.
Start with the frame, not the file
The easiest workflow is backwards from what most people do. Pick the spot on your wall, choose a frame size that fits it, and then print your file at that size. High-resolution files (like the 300 dpi files in the Piktum library) scale cleanly from a small A5 desk frame to a large 24×36″ statement piece.
The most common print sizes
- 2:3 ratio — 4×6″, 8×12″, 12×18″, 16×24″, 20×30″, 24×36″
- 3:4 ratio — 6×8″, 9×12″, 12×16″, 18×24″
- 4:5 ratio — 8×10″, 11×14″ (close), 16×20″
- International A sizes — A5, A4, A3, A2, A1 (all share the same ratio, so one file covers them all)
- Square 1:1 — 8×8″, 10×10″, 12×12″
The golden rule: a file made for one ratio prints perfectly at every size in that same ratio. Printing a 4:5 file in a 2:3 frame means cropping — sometimes fine, sometimes it cuts into the artwork.
How big can a 300 dpi file go?
Resolution decides how large you can print before quality drops. The math is simple: pixels ÷ 300 = inches at gallery quality. A 7200×9600 px file prints razor-sharp at 24×32″. And here is a secret from the print world: viewed from a normal distance, 150–200 dpi still looks excellent on large posters — so a 300 dpi file has generous headroom.
Three tips before you print
- Order a test print of your favorite size on cheap paper first — colors and scale read differently on a wall than on a screen.
- Consider a mat. An 8×10″ print in an 11×14″ matted frame looks more expensive than the same print edge-to-edge.
- Go one size bigger than you think. The most common wall-art mistake is printing too small for the wall. Above a sofa or crib, aim for 60–75% of the furniture width.
